Steppenwolf Theatre Company is a Chicago-based international performing arts institution committed to ensemble collaboration and artistic risk through its work with its permanent ensemble, guest artists, partner institutions and the community. Steppenwolf has redefined the landscape of acting and performance by spawning a generation of America’s most gifted artists. Founded in 1976 as an ensemble of nine actors, Steppenwolf has grown into an internationally renowned company of thirty-five artists whose talents include acting, directing, playwriting, filmmaking, and textual adaptation. No other American theater ensemble has survived as long and thrived as much as the Steppenwolf company of artists. Founded in 2000, Steppenwolf’s Auxiliary Council, a community of dynamic young professionals, strengthens Steppenwolf’s ability to advance artistic experimentation and collaboration by developing new financial resources and new audiences for the creation and presentation of innovative theater. In just six years of operation, the Auxiliary Council has provided over $320,000 in contributions to the theater, enabling Steppenwolf to continue its mission of advancing the vitality of and diversity of American theater. The primary fundraiser for the Auxiliary Council is the Annual Red or White Ball, held each spring in Chicago. The Auxiliary Council supports Steppenwolf’s nationally recognized arts education program: Arts Exchange. Arts Exchange annually serves over 12,000 individuals from Chicago’s most underserved populations through productions and programs specifically geared towards teachers, families and young adults.
