The mission of the Big Shoulders Fund is to provide support to Catholic schools in the neediest areas of inner-city Chicago. 100% of the funds raised are used to support children through scholarships, special education programs, instructional equipment, much needed school facility improvements, faculty support, and operating grants.
Big Shoulders provides support to 93 inner-city Chicago Catholic schools, which offer 25,000 children - 80% minorities, 32% are not Catholic, and 58% live in poverty - the gift of a quality, values-based education. Since its inception, Big Shoulders has raised over $172 million and awards $10 to $12 million annually in grants and scholarships.
The Auxiliary Board is a group of active and altruistic young professionals who help support the mission of Big Shoulders by volunteering as tutors, mentors and school board members, reaching out to the community, and fundraising. Since their founding two years ago, they have raised $40,000 and grown to over 90 members. The Board is helping to make a huge difference in the lives of the students and schools served by Big Shoulders not only by all the funds they raise going to the Big Shoulders Fund Auxiliary Board Scholarship Fund which continues to add new scholars every school year, but by becoming invested in the Big Shoulders Fund schools and students’ lives. They are helping to carry children’s’ dreams.
